Catalyst welcomes new Chair of Trustees

Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum in Widnes, Cheshire is delighted to mark a new period in its mission to inform, educate and inspire, with the appointment of Hugh Dowding as the new Chair of Trustees.

Hugh joins Catalyst, after a successful career in the Chemicals and Lubricants Industries, having been CEO of Polartech Group based in Manchester and subsequently Vice-President of the French Motul Group. In addition, Hugh has been a strong presence as a Board Member and President of Trade Associations both in the UK and Europe.

Hugh said “I have been familiar with Catalyst for a number of years, but it was a privilege to be asked to join the Trustees of Catalyst and to become Chair. The unique position of the Museum and Archive in recording the birthplace of so much important chemistry and our role in both the local community and in education means that securing the future of Catalyst and improving our visitor experience are fascinating challenges and I look forward to playing my part in the organisation’s future.”

Welcoming Hugh to Catalyst, Dr Lee Juby, CEO said “It is a pleasure to welcome Hugh as the new Chair of Trustees. He joins Catalyst at a really exciting time as we prepare to submit our bid to The National Lottery Heritage Fund to make our heritage offer accessible to new and under-represented audiences and I look forward to working with Hugh as we enter the next phase of development for Catalyst.”

Over the last three years, Catalyst has undergone a major refurbishment programme funded by the Wellcome Trust and UKRI. If successful with The National Lottery Heritage Fund bid, the next phase of development will see the museum archives opened up to a wider audience, the development of a co-created gallery on the first floor, refurbishment of the glass-walled Observatory gallery and new interpretation in the transition spaces, all aimed at improving the experience for both visitors and industry partners.
