In this talk we will look at how the human foot evolved to become this highly-specialised structure upon which we, upright primates, rely so much. Understanding how feet evolved helps us understand how they function – or not! We will give plenty of examples form our own biomechanical research. Examples are from work in our laboratory but also from work in remote locations where people walk on natural terrains with indigenous shoes, or no shoes at all. It will become clear how little we actually know about how the human foot works!
