October SciBar – Wednesday 11th October 2017
This month’s talk will be presented by Gerard Gilligan,
from the Liverpool Astronomical Society and the Society for the History of Astronomy (SHA)
The History of Astronomy – 30,000 years in 60 minutes!
In this lecture we look at the foundations of Astronomy, the oldest of the natural sciences, and dating back to antiquity, with its origins in the religious, mythological, cosmological, calendrical, and astrological beliefs and practices of prehistory. In some cultures, astronomical data was used for astrological prognostication. But soon the invention and development of the astronomical telescope and space travel revolutionised the study of all objects outside the confines of the Earth.
SciBar is organised by the Friends of Catalyst and the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre
