Heritage Open Days - Bradford

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest community led festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations. Every year in September it brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history. Stories are told, traditions explored, and histories brought to life. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.

Did you or someone you know work for ICI or one of the big chemical giants nearby, like Brunner Mond? Don’t miss out on an unforgettable experience during Heritage Open Days weekend! On the 19th and 20th of September, our doors swing open for FREE, inviting you to dive into a fascinating world of local history.

Join our Collections Manager Judith in the glass-walled Observatory Gallery, where she’ll unveil an exclusive trove of ICI photographs—packed with people, places, stories, and surprises! See if you can uncover a glimpse of your own family’s past or discover unknown ancestors.

But that’s just the beginning! Wander through our Interactive galleries, uncover the rich heritage of the area, and meet members from the Runcorn and Widnes Historical Societies and The Daniel Adamson (The Danny), a remarkable historic steam-powered tugboat.

When you need a break, treat yourself to delicious snacks and drinks at the Catalyst Café—where you can soak up breath-taking views of Spike Island and beyond. Get ready for a weekend full of discovery, inspiration, and fun!
