Volunteering at Catalyst
From making new friends to preserving our local history, inspiring young ones into a love of science or simply enhancing your CV, volunteering is a great opportunity to make a real difference. At Catalyst there’s something for everyone.
Which volunteer are you?
Can you strike up conversations with complete strangers? Would you like to mesmerise people with science tricks and keep them saying ‘wow!’? We’re looking for confident, chatty, outgoing volunteers to ‘science busk’ (no guitar required) inside or outside Catalyst for a couple of hours, perhaps at a weekend or during school holidays – leaving visitors wanting more . . . science! Full training provided – just bring your energy with you!
Set Up Scientist
Have you always dreamed of donning a lab coat, setting up experiments and doing the whole ‘mad’ scientist thing? Well your dreams may come true . . . well maybe not quite! But if you’re passionate about helping young people discover fun with science, or you’re looking for experience in an ‘informal educational environment’, our workshops run on weekdays (Tues – Fri) and your help would be invaluable during one of these days, setting up experiments and getting stuck in helping the young ones.
Local History Guru
Do you have a head full of local history facts and you’re keen to know more? If you’re a self confessed history buff and you love sharing what you know with others – then come on down and help us bring alive the local history for our visitors. We have regular visits from groups and individuals, we’d love to be able to give them short tours of our museum and have someone on hand to answer questions and guide them around. We’ll provide the history facts, just bring enthusiasm.
Do you watch history programmes? Are you interested in capturing wonderful events from bygone years? Are you also meticulous? Do you finish tasks you start and enjoy attention to detail? Does this sound like you? If you are passionate about delving into local history or family history and preserving stories from the past, then you’ll enjoy being an Archive volunteer – who give their time, whenever they can, to capture and preserve a slice of history.
Mend and Fix it Person
Are you the ‘go-to’ person when something breaks down? Do you get satisfaction from fixing things? Do you have a tool for every job? Well, be assured, we have a job for all your tools. From little people enjoying our exhibits a little too enthusiastically, to working out of a building from the 1860s, we always have a few little jobs that need some attention and an experienced hand. Any time you could spare would be valuable to us.
Can you chat to anyone and make them feel welcome? So you like to keep the place looking fresh and clear? We need outgoing, enthusiastic volunteers who can help out in our cafe over a lunchtime, to serve visitors with drinks and food and to help tidy up. All you need is a welcoming and helpful attitude, no experience needed. This is also perfect for enhancing your CV. We’ll provide you with all the support and help you’ll need.
