CRISPR-Cas9 is a recently developed molecular technique that can be used to remove or to replace a defective gene with a functioning one.  CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. These are short, repetitive sequences in our genomic DNA that are spread throughout the genome. Cas is a protein that acts as molecular scissors.
